This inspiring story is of a rising startup called Alter started by Deven Patel in the marketing technology space to act as a domain marketplace that connects entrepreneurs with premium business names. Here is the story of Alter in Deven’s own words.

Introduce us to your idea of Alter

While working on my own startup ideas I noticed how difficult it was to find good business names, especially since they needed an accompanying domain name in today’s high-tech world where websites and emails are the norm. And with millions of businesses around the world competing for customer attention, the brand name becomes ever so important.

A premium name can help a company stand out from the crowd. However, finding a great domain name is like looking for a needle in the haystack. Most are already taken and existing owners want outrageous prices in return.

This is why I started Alter, a domain marketplace that connects entrepreneurs with premium business names. Domains found on our marketplace are carefully hand-picked and professionally appraised by our team of branding experts. Every domain is priced at market value and comes with a relist value guarantee so you can recoup your investment in the future if needed.

What’s your strategy story? What led you to start Alter?

I am the founder and CEO of Alter. I started his journey on the internet over 20 years ago when I discovered my passion for building websites. Site builders like Homestead and GeoCities were my first tools of trade.

Soon thereafter, I realized the web had the power to change the world. As a serial entrepreneur, I founded a number of startups across various industries like marketing, web hosting, social networking, blogging, and SaaS. Now I am on a mission to help other entrepreneurs succeed.

What marketing, operation strategies are you adopting at Alter?

Our plan is to stay as lean as possible and think outside the box when it comes to marketing. Startups are always restricted on resources so we plan to utilize them very efficiently.

Any strategy mistakes you have made and what did you learn?

One of the most important things I learned through all my ventures was how big of a role timing played on the success or failure of a business. Although we can’t quite predict or control timing, being mindful of it helps eliminate a lot of the risk that comes along with starting a new business.

Finally what advice do you have for your fellow entrepreneur readers?

Most new entrepreneurs don’t think twice about their company name. But a brand name literally has the power to make or break your business. This is more true today than ever before now that there are countless alternatives to every product or service imaginable.

Sure, every business may have its own world-changing differentiator but from the outside, they all look the same at which point the main differentiator ends up becoming their brand name.

In a world full of distractions, customers no longer have the attention span to thoroughly research what they buy so they rely on their emotions. Customer perception is everything in business today.
